ABOUT SERVICE LEARNING

Service learning is learning by doing a service to our community or someone around it. When we help others it helps us to learn new skills and develop connections to our community. It is a way to learn what is going on around us and at the same time perform a service to those around us.
The reasons that we do service learning is to develop new skills and new ways of helping those in our community. When we do this our school gets a grant which helps us seeing how we don’t have much money. Having more money for our school helps to be able to perform more tasks in the community which helps us to perform service learning. Learning by doing something gives you something hands on to reinforce what you are learning.
It helps us because we are learning new skills that could help sometime in the future. It also helps us because we get grant money so our school will be able to better our education budget and help us perform more in the community. when we are helping others we are helping our selves grow and develop. We are developing new skills which are taught to us by a reinforced service that we are doing for the people in our community.
We are learning character stuff in our afternoon Friday groups and it is about communication and negotiation. It affects us because alot of the time you have to be able to communicate to others what you are going to do and why. The negotiation part also affects us because sometimes you have to be able to negotiate and talk out what you will do and why.

My favorite part of this class is helping others. My favorite project of this class would be the Topeka Water Festival when we got to teach a bunch of fourth graders about plastic and paper bags. I liked it because we got to teach them and hopefully encourage them to make a difference.
