Robby's veiw on the JDLA Water Festival

At this years JDLA water festival I got to help out at the stream table by getting water for them, getting small trees for them and talking to the kids now and then. The people from the stream table are from Jefferson County Conservation District. At the stream table we showed the kids about how streams can erode the dirt, rock, and even the trees around the stream. Also they were taught about how planing trees and grass in large quantities can help keep the stream walls from eroding. We served the children hamburgers, chips, a cookie and a flavored drink for lunch. After lunch we had bout 4 more groups then we thanked all the kids and teachers for coming and sent them home.we then cleaned up and we went home as well.

MONDAY MINUTE

On September the 30th we had our John Dewey Water Festival for the third and fifth graders of two different school districts. The group I was in talked about drinking water, ground water, pollutants, and landfills. Each of the five people in my group had a different part; mine was to ask the kids about drinking water, ground water, and how pollutants affect our water. Alie’s part was to tell the  kids about how the landfills affect our water, Wes’s part was to tell them about the history of landfills, and finally Jody’s and Ariel’s part was to help the kids to build a model landfill. From this experience we learned that kids prefer a more hands on activity.

After the water festival we had a celebration the Friday of the next week. When we had the celebration we watched a movie entitled Nine, went out to Cici’s pizza for lunch, went on a small walk, then did an activity back at the school. It was fun because it gave us a break from the normal and allowed us to stretch our legs in a sense. The movie wasn’t very exciting but when we went out to lunch the real fun started. Between my friends and I we had a stack of buffet plates almost a foot and a half tall. The buffet had all kinds of pizza and different sodas including an energy soda named vault ( I myself drank five glasses of this).

On October the Thirteenth we went to the Oskaloosa  Public Library to present a piece about Styrofoam (correctly called Polystyrene) about how it is bad for the environment and causes many negative health affects in animals and humans. Polystyrene is a known carcinogen, cancer causing substance, and has a chemical called benzene which burns away our ozone layer. When we got there they provided us with a lunch consisting of chili, cheese and crackers, and cinnamon rolls. The after some of the specifics that they had to go over we presented. Overall it went smooth and they enjoyed us being there.
